Full Marks For Students As Bulgarian Teachers Strike
Teachers at a school in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia have found a novel way of striking that seems to be popular with their students: give all of them full marks as their end-of-year grades.
"We have given a six (the maximum grade in the system) to all 760 students in the school, except the graduates", chemistry teacher Gergana Krasteva says.
She says the teachers chose this way to protest against their salaries because they did not want to inconvenience the students by going on a proper strike and cancelling classes.
The school's teachers also urged colleagues around the country to boycott the beginning of the new school year in September if they do not get a pay rise.
Bulgaria has been swept by a wave of demands for higher salaries by civil servants in the past months but Finance Minister Plamen Oresharshki has turned down all requests by simply saying: "The Mint is closed".
