Girl Guides Want To Learn About Safe Sex, Furniture

Girl guides, who are best known for skills such as starting fires, want to learn about safe sex and assembling flat-pack furniture, according to a new survey.

According to the poll, about 80% of Senior Guides, aged 16 to 25, want safe-sex advice and 93% want guidance on how to manage money. With 80%, "practising safe sex" ranked fourth, assembling furniture was eighth with "managing money" topping the list.

By contrast, for members aged 10 to 15, "cooking a healthy meal" topped the list, though "standing up to boys" was fourth.

About 10 million people worldwide are members of the 'Girl Guides', of which 500,000 are in the UK, with a waiting list of 50,000.

The survey by Girlguiding UK was an attempt by the organisation, founded nearly 100 years ago, to remain relevant to young women in Britain.

A spokeswoman for the group said that the views of the more than 1000 guides surveyed would be factored into future planning.
