Scammers Try To Sell Oven Doors As Wide-Screen TVs
Police in Vacaville, California are warning residents about a new scam after a local man was arrested trying to sell a wide-screen TV that turned out to be nothing more than a used oven door.
Police were alerted when a woman called police to report a man tried to sell her a flat screen television in the parking lot of a discount store. The man promised "the deal of the century" but the woman said she wasn't interested.
She was suspicious and took down the license plate number of the seller's car before he and another man drove away.
Police spotted the car on the interstate and stopped the man. When officers unwrapped two shrink-wrapped rectangular objects that appeared to be flat screen televisions with price tags at first.
The front sides of the objects had a tinted piece of plastic that resembled a television screen but were used oven doors. Police also found two boxes that were labelled as if they contained laptop computers but instead contained 12-inch floor tiles.
The officer, Matt Lydon, said: "The adage rings true, 'If it appears to be too good to be true, it probably is.'"
