UK Woman Slept With Sperm Donor For 'Natural' Birth
When Brit Lisa Evans used an unregulated British website to find a sperm donor, it wasn't controversial enough for her. ![]()
So when she chose the donor and they met, the two thought that unlike a conventional sperm donation which is carried out by artificial insemination, they should sleep together.
This, she says, was a more "natural" way to conceive a child.
"I was incredibly nervous and several times I did think: 'Gosh, what am I doing here?'", says Lisa. "I had brought an insemination kit to our meeting in readiness. But John was nice, very middle class and articulate, and all I could think about was how much I wanted a child and that he could be the man to give me one."
"So when he said 'Well, shall we go ahead then?' I thought 'Why not?' and I had sex with him. I know it is a big risk to take, but it was my fertile time and ultimately I just wanted a baby before it was too late."
There was a recent change to British law which allows the children of sperm donors to trace their biological fathers, and since then the number of men legally donating sperm has plummeted.
"I didn't feel I had any time to lose, so it was either this or nothing."
"Ideally, I always wanted to have children in a conventional, committed relationship," she explains. "But, despite my best efforts, I simply haven't been lucky enough to meet my Mr Right. I saw 35 as a real milestone and, while I felt I could have a relationship at any time in my life, I worried that time for having a baby was running out fast."
Lisa says she didn't get pregnant the first time and so the pair met again for the following two months.
"In all, we met in different hotels at my fertile time twice again, so we slept together three times."
"I don't feel he said he was a doctor just to get me into bed," she says. "I know it might be hard to understand, but he didn't say it in a seedy way and I didn't feel I would be under pressure to have sex."
"But John made it clear that if I declined to have sex, he would have been perfectly happy to donate via artificial insemination."
