Utah Man Mistakenly Sent Check For Two Million
A Utah department of Commerce typing error made a man an instant millionaire after they put his name on a huge check for over two-million dollars.
But you may be more surprised at Jerry Mika did next: "It's a little bit more than a couple thousand dollars it's twopoint.. two hundred? I can't even say it, it's so much."
His name and address were on the check. It was real but it's wrong. The check was supposed to be written for fifteen dollars. It was a refund for an overcharge. We've all heard of over billing, like the man who was charged $4,300 for four burgers, but a refunding error for two million dollars? That's quite a mistake.
"I looked at it and I said 'are you ready to pack your bags, we're leaving today?'," Mika said.
He couldn't think of any real reason the state would mail him a check for this much, so after showing his friends and bragging about being a millionaire for a few weeks, he showed up at the state finance division to turn it in, but not without a few jokes.
"She says 'sir, this is a mistake' and I said 'I've already booked my flight to Hawaii, now what and I going to do?," he told the woman at the counter.
Francine Giani, Executive Director of the Department of Commerce said she's glad he turned it in: "He's been having some fun with it and that's fine. He didn't cash it and we appreciate that portion of it."
Giani says an employee accidentally typed the seven-digit receipt number in as the check amount, and no one noticed it before it went in the mail. But she's sure Mika wouldn't have got away with it: "It was an error and something that we would have caught."
Mika said he knew if he turned the check in karma would return the favor. What about his orginal refund? He's still waiting for that fifteen dollar check.leaves the building.
