Stranger Walks Up, Gives Caf Couple Blank Cheque
A couple in Iowa were just enjoying a bite in a caf - when a mysterious stranger walked up to them and changed their lives by handing them a blank cheque.
It wasn't a practical joke, rather it's exactly what happened to Alissa and Barry as they ate at Dr Salami's Caf in Pella, Iowa.
"He basically just came into the restaurant and just came in and started talking to us," Barry says. He says the man was most interested in whether they had any children.
After they replied that they did indeed have a 2-year-old child, the man slid a blank check across the table and asked the couple to fill out the check with any amount they wished. The two assumed he was joking and made the check out for $100,000.
The man then signed the check and said, "I'm good for it."
The next day the couple was unsure of what they were going to do with the check: "We're either going to throw it away or try it." They thought "let's give it a whirl," Barry says. "We really didn't think it was going to happen. It's too rare for something like that to happen."
So they did, and to their amazement the check actually cleared and they received the gift of a lifetime.
The man did give them certain conditions. He told them not to reveal their last names or his identity and to use the money to buy a house. He also said that he always regretted that he had no grandchildren and to name the child after him if they had another child.
The man also tipped the waitress $100 on his way out: "I hope no one finds out who he is because that is the way he wanted it. He is just a nice guy," the waitress said. "You never know who is sitting next to. You never when you when you can make a difference in someone else's life."
