'Deathbed Confession' Man Charged After Recovering
An Oklahoma man who thought he was dying and confessed to having killed a neighbour in 1977 made just one mistake -- he didn't actually die.
And now having been charged with murder after making a recovery, James Brewer could face the death penalty over the unsolved killing in Tennessee 32 years ago.
Brown apparently wanted to unburden himself of the sin he had carried with him for three decades and so his wife summoned police to the hospital.
Detectives said the churchgoing man told them he wanted to "cleanse his soul" and said he shot dead a man he believed was trying to seduce his wife more than 30 years ago.
"He wanted to cleanse his soul, because he thought he was going to the great beyond," says police detective Tony Grasso, who interviewed Brewer in hospital.
Brewer moved to Oklahoma from Tennessee after jumping bail after he was originally arrested and charged with Carroll's murder in 1977.
The former factory worker changed his name to Michael Anderson and settled down with his wife, Dorothy, in the town of Shawnee.
The man and his wife have sold all their possessions and Brewer has surrendered to authorities.
