The West Michigan Whitecaps, a minor league baseball team, will be offering up major league cholesterol, carbohydrates and calories in an enormous hamburger being added to the menu this year at the Fifth Third Ballpark.
Called the Fifth Third Burger, the burger will pack 4,800 calories of artery-clogging goodness.
"People are going to go crazy over it," said Scott Lane, president of the West Michigan Whitecaps. "It's just monstrous."
The 4-pound, $20 burger features five beef patties, five slices of cheese, nearly a cup of chili and liberal doses of salsa and corn chips, all on an 8-inch sesame-seed bun.
The Grand Rapids Press reports that anyone who eats the entire 4,800-calorie behemoth in one sitting will receive a special T-shirt. Saner fans can divide it up with a pizza cutter and share.
"I expect a few crazies to try it, you bet," Lane said. "Especially on our Thirsty Thursday nights" when fans get discounted beers.
The Whitecaps, a Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, have become known for their curious menu offerings.
In recent years, the team has served up deep-fried Twinkies, turkey drumsticks and deep-fried Pepsi - cola-flavored batter dunked in hot oil and drizzled with Pepsi syrup.
UPDATE:
Susan Levin of the Washington-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has sent a letter to the West Michigan Whitecaps, asking for the enormous burger to be labeled a "dietary disaster" that increases the risk of cancer and heart disease.
