Teacher Accused Of Surfing Web While Students Have Sex
A teacher in Lee County, Florida, who was browsing the Internet while two special needs students engaged in sexual acts is on his way to being fired.
Thomas McCoy, an employee with the district since 1998, has been suspended with pay pending a hearing examining his actions when district officials believe he was surfing the web while two students went behind a bookshelf and one performed a sex act on the other.
McCoy was supervising four students while the usual teacher was off campus with other students from the classroom.
School board members have been notified that at some point under his care, a 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl went behind a bookshelf.
That's when another teacher walking past the room, Virginia Newsome, reported that she saw the students through the window as the girl performing oral sex on the boy.
Newsome then went into the room to inform McCoy and found he was on a computer with his back to the students.
By checking records of the computer's Internet activity, they discovered he was busy tracking various sports news at the time of the incident.
Evidently McCoy had also received an e-mail one month before the incident asking him to closely supervise the 15-year-old girl because "there seem to be a few issues where she is concerned with the boys", and she needed "visual supervision" at all times.
The district is formally charging him with inadequate supervision resulting in inappropriate behavior between two students; failing to uphold the highest degree of ethical conduct; and failing to make a reasonable effort to protect students from conditions harmful to learning.
