China Sex Theme Park Debate Sparks Protests
A sex theme park in south-west China that exhibits naked human sculptures, giant genitals and boasts a sex technique workshop is stirring up howls of protest.
'Love Land', billed as China's first-ever sex theme park, is slated to open in Chongqing municipality in October, but detractors hope the project will never see the light of day, reports China Daily.
"We are building the park for the good of the public... to help adults enjoy a harmonious sex life," says manager Lu Xiaoqing.
"Sex is a taboo subject in China but people really need to have more access to information about it."
Besides displays on sex history and techniques, the park boasts a giant rotating statue of the bottom of a nearly naked woman bent over at the waist.
The announcement of the opening of the park elicited numerous comments, with the majority of postings voicing opposition to the park.
"These things are too exposed," policewoman Chongqing Liu Daiwei tells the paper.
"I will feel uncomfortable to look at them when other people are around."
Below are photos from a similar sex theme park in Korea, which is described as "a place where sexually orientated art and eroticism meet. The park breaks the traditional tabooes surrounding sex so that the visitor can appreciate the natural beauty of sexuality."
UPDATE:
The China sex theme park has been torn down after officials ruled it would have an 'evil influence' on society.
He Shizhong, head of the municipal publicity department, says the company behind the park had "ignored its social responsibility and was interested only in profiting from sensationalism."
