Two-Headed Snake Going On Sale For $150,000
The World Aquarium in St. Louis has been home to a very unique creature since 1999, a one-of-a-kind two-headed albino rat snake. The president of the aquariuam, Mr. Leonard Sonnenschein, has recently decided to sell the reptile and has put it up for sale with a price tag of $150,000. ![]()
The snake has two separate heads with two mouths. It's said to be the only of it's kind in the world. "It's an amazing snake", Sonnenschein said of the snake. "When people see it they are awe-struck".
The 6 1/2-year-old snake came to the aquarium's attention when its previous owner distributed a circular offering it for sale days after its birth. The aquarium paid $15,000 knowing most two-headed snakes don't live more than a few months.
But the snake, named 'We', has survived and thrived. An inch thick and 4 feet long, she is a healthy size for a rat snake. Her body is white, but the heads have a reddish appearance. We has survived because, unlike some two-headed animals, both mouths are connected to the same stomach.
The snake has been in the spotlight before when in 2004, a disgruntled City Museum worker stole it. Authorities found the snake in the garage of the man's home in Illinois as the man was said to be attempting to sell it. What the man failed to realise was it was the only one of it's kind in the world so tracking it down was not very difficult.
See, sometimes two heads really are better than one.
UPDATE:
The two-headed snake, the main attraction at the World Aquarium, has died. The 8-year-old rat snake died this week, most two-headed snakes survive for only a week or two.
"It's terrible news", caretaker Sonnenschein said. "People come in every day and say: 'I'm here to see the two-headed snake'".
Sonnenschein said a taxidermist is preserving We's body, which should be back on display within a week.
