He laughed and smiled as the district judge, Thomas Phillips, read the charge. The man, Ryan Daniel Goff, who is 20 years old, has been accused of extortion.
"I don't recall seeing anything like this before", county prosecutor Alan Schneider told a local paper. "It was pretty ill-conceived from the beginning".
The sheriff's department said that while eating at the restaurant, Goff complained to an employee that his burrito tasted "funny". Goff was offered a replacement burrito but declined it and insisted on keeping his when he left.
He later called Taco Bell's regional manager, Robert Buckle, and said he wanted "something that would make my ears tingle" to settle the matter, according to court documents.
Schneider also said Goff's girlfriend told an investigator that she was with Goff when he bought frozen mice at a pet store and saw him put one in the burrito. Goff already has a criminal record and his latest idea could be punishable with up to five years in prison.
