Helpline For Prostitutes During World Cup
An organisation fighting prostitution in Germany has launched a 24-hour helpline for prostitutes in trouble during the 2006 World Cup.
The organisation, Solwodi, says the helpline will be operational until three weeks after the final of the June 9 to July 9 football extravaganza which is being hosted by 12 German cities.
Three million visitors from all over the world are expected to converge in the cities hosting matches. The German sex industry is ready to meet the challenge of increased demand during the four-week tournament with some 40,000 prostitutes expected to come to Germany for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, leading US congressional human rights activist Christopher Smith accused the German government of providing venues for prostitution with state and local funds and "facilitating prostitution" for the soccer tournament.
It appears that prostitution will be as big a part of this year's tournament as the soccer.
