3,700+ Women Break World Breastfeeding Record
Burps, slurps and thirsty cries were the new language in the Philippine capital of Manila as over 3,700 mothers gathered to break the world breastfeeding record.
The women were thrilled at the turnout which was meant to simultaneously break the record and promote breastfeeding in a country where many poor families believe that expensive powdered milk is more nutritious.
Organizers said around 16,000 children died every year in the Philippines because their milk formula was mixed with dirty water or the wrong amount of powder. And only 16 percent of mothers in the Philippines breastfed their children for the first six months.
The previous record for the largest number of women simultaneously breastfeeding was 1,135 in Berkeley, California in 2002.
