People waiting to cross the street were seen grabbing the bank notes from the road after the mystery driver threw the money out of his moving car. The incident was caught on closed-circuit television.
The man was heard shouting "Who wants free money?" while driving away from the crossing and throwing the money. The pile of money stopped traffic as many drivers got out of their cars to join pedestrians collecting the cash on the road.
A stunned shopkeeper, John Morris, looked on. "I was standing in the door and suddenly I saw all these notes. I thought it was a joke - I couldn't believe it. The money landed on the floor and people were looking at it. Then they were bundling it in their pockets. I have never seen anything like it before".
Witnesses say the man threw about 20,000 British pounds -- about $37,000.
