Bangkok Office Introduces Daily Nap Time
A Bangkok municipal office has launched a new program to 'increase productivity'. And the plan? Turn off the lights just past noon so that civil servants can take an afternoon nap.
The district office in central Bangkok says it wants to infuse city workers with a bit more pep and has set up a lunchtime "nap room" with soft music, sweet-smelling flowers and strict rules barring mobile phones and talk.
"I've been taking naps at lunchtime for a long time, and decided to introduce the project to my staff in November", says Surakiet Limcharoen, the district's top official who started the program.
A picture in a Bangkok newspaper showed the 'nap room' as a wood-paneled room with employees seated around a conference table, with their heads down on desks and the blinds drawn.
Surakiet says out of 200 employees at the municipal office, there are at least 20 'regular nappers' who have reported feeling "fresher and brighter" after a midday snooze.
